Marathon to Snickers

I’ll start off this blog with a pretty famous change in product name that happened years ago without anyone consulting me first… OK, I was a kid.
I always remember enjoying the odd Marathon and suddenly it gets transformed into a Snickers! Now, as a kid, I’ve got enough sweeties to remember as it is without ‘them’ (when you’re a youngster, you have no concept of who changes these things and it turns out that ‘them’ encapsulates quite a lot of invisible people in positions of power) adding to my worries of where to spend my hard-begged-for pocket money. So my main concern is to just remember the new name when purchasing my desired Marathon.

Which one is it?!
I also recall this being quite an exciting thing when they changed it. Apparently at the time they had pre-warned everyone in the UK for a year and a half, that it was “Internationally known as Snickers” but I can’t remember this to be honest.
So it was actually called Snickers all along in the US and is the best selling chocloate bar of all time! There are lots of other instances of products being rebranded for the UK market which I’ll blog about in future, but it begs the question: “Why call it something different in the first place?” It turns out it was quite the marketing ploy and took Snickers to the third most popular chocolate bar in the UK, from ninth as the Marathon.
I have to also say that I love the recent adverts with Mr T in them, they still seem to be thinking on their feet to advertise an already well established product.
Also, did you know: The name ‘Snickers’ came from the name of a horse owned by the Mars family?! To be fair, Mars own Snickers, so it’s not that amazing as trivia goes.
